| Abstract: | This paper deals with the issue of why comparative research on welfare state attitudes has failed to establish a link btw. welfare regimes (here as: w-regs.) and popular support for redistribution (as: supp-for-redstr) . There are reasons proposed why a link btw. w-regs. and attitudes has not been found. An alternative approach is developed in which w-regs. are operationalized using a range of theoretically defining characteristics. Using data on 13 Western European countries from the first two waves of the European Social Survey, the empirical analysis provides mixed support for the hypothesized relationship btw. w-regs. and supp-for-redstr. |
