Abstract: | This article recalls the memorable historical context in which the Declaration of Philadelphia was adopted in 1944, outlines its key ideas and their contribution to shaping post-war world order, and assesses its impact on the ILO's work and its continuing significance. Its emphasis on ensuring economic and social security greatly extended the ILO's original mandate. This translated into, for example, research, technical cooperation and attempts to influence structural adjustment and stabilization policies during the 1980s crisis. |
