Abstract: | The empirical results of a survey of more than 1700 business firms in Canada are presented, from which a group of 150 innovative ones was identified and than compared with the others as regards the impact which computer technology has had on the productivity and size of the workforce. It is stated that the developments in these innovative firms may be indicative of what will take place on a much larger scale in the next five to ten years. All categories of employees are affected by computer technology. A significantly greater decrease was found in the innovative firms. The clerical and secretarial staff was most affected during the first phase of computerisation. |
