Abstract:The main question addressed is how to enrich on-the-job training, and especially the traditional apprenticeship system, without discouraging employers by imposing excessive burdens on them and forcing a practice that, despite all its shortcomings, is eminently suited to transmitting know-how and skills in Africa. If the cost-effectiveness of training is to be increased, it will be necessary to combine on-the-job training with theoretical instruction in training centres, to improve the pedagogical capacities of trainers and to grant them fair remuneration for their efforts.
