Abstract:This paper explores the effects of regulatory constraints and their relaxation on managerial discretion (here as: m-disc.) and internal fit (as: int-fit) in the context of the U.S. airline industry. The results suggest that when m-disc. is limited in one set of choice, they compensate by using their greater level of discretion in some other area to achieve int-fit. It is shown the pursuit of fit to matter in the sense of having measurable efficiency consequences. It is also found the fit to trump 'best practice', at least in this context. In this respect, the findings provide a validation of the contingency perspective on int-fit etc.
