Abstract:This study aims to show that some governance structures are more robust in dealing with internal and external dynamics than others. Herein, developed are propositions (here as: props.) about the characteristics needed to be built into an alliance for it to be robust. These props. are based on a case study of the KLM-Northwest alliance. After frequent changes in their alliance governance structure, these airline companies found a model having resisted turbulence in the airline industry for over a decade. This model, the virtual joint venture, has among others as a key characteristic a 50-50 profit sharing arrangement.
