Abstract:Using data on local government cultural spending in 304 Flemish municipalities (hereafter as: muncpts.) in 2002, this study analyzes whether and how muncpts. influence each other in the decision of spending resources on the arts. Following 'central place theory', this analysis focuses on the idea that especially for cultural expenditures, large muncpts. and specifically 'central places' may affect their neighbours' behaviour differently than small muncpts. This idea is supported by empirical analysis. It is shown that Flemish muncpts.' cultural spending is generally positively affected by that in neighbouring (as: n-b-g.) muncpts. However, this pattern is significantly more complex for muncpts. n-b-g. the 13 largest Flemish cities.
