Abstract:This study analyzes the association btw. the spatial concentration (here as: cnstrn.) of ethnic minorities and racial harassment (here as: r-h). Ethnic cnstrn. relates to r-h. through at least three channels: i. hostility (as: hsty.) in the attitudes of majority individuals (as: m-inds.) expressed as harassment (as: h.) behaviour, ii. the probability of minority individuals meeting m-inds., and iii. the cost of expressing hsty. aggressively. Hence, h. cannot simply be modelled as a stronger form of hsty. Based on unique data from the British Fourth National Survey of Ethnic Minorities (FNSEM) 1993-1994, it is shown that, in areas of higher local ethnic concentration, experience of h. is lower, even though hsty. is not.
