Abstract: | The retail flour market worth £40 mn is in steep decline. Self-raising flour accounts for 52% of flour market volume. Savoury mixes command a 52% of baking mix volume. Weekly consumption of flour fell from 82 gm per head in 1993 to 54 gm in 1997. Three major are represented in both flour and baking mixes: ABF, Kerry and Tomkins. The leading brands of flour and baking mixes are Homepride and Green's. Multiples account for 86% of flour sales. Flour prices have fallen by 16% over the last five years because of intense competition between own-label products. Prospects for the flour market in the short and medium term are bad. |
