Abstract: | This paper explores several implications of Coase's insights using a real case of contracting for environmental property rights (henceforth as: e-p-rs). The case study contributes with empirical content to basic transaction costs concepts by analyzing the design and implementation of a contractual arrangement btw. a pollutee, that is, a bottler of mineral water, and several polluting farmers. Bargaining is analyzed btw. the two parties to find out how transaction cost issues were overcome and how they succeeded in contracting for e-p-rs. The Vittel case is compared with other similar ones to draw lessons for e-p-rs. negotiations. |
