Abstract:This paper performs the first empirical assessment of theories concerning risk taking by banks, their ownership structures (hereafter as: o-str/s.), and national bank regulations, focusing on conflicts btw. bank managers and owners over risk. It is shown that bank risk taking (here as: b-r-tng.) varies positively with the comparative power of shareholders within the corporate governance (here as: corp-gov.) structure of each bank. In addition, it is shown that the relation btw. bank risk and capital regulations, deposit insurance policies, and restrictions on bank activities depends critically on each bank's o-str/s. The findings show that the same regulation has different effects on b-r-tng. depending on the bank's corp-gov. structure.
