Abstract:The confectionery market was worth 4,2bn of pounds sterling in 1992, of which chocolate confectionery accounted for 2, 9bn of pounds sterling. Market volume has been static since 1990 due to the recession. Women are the main buyers of confectionery. Cadbury is market leader, with 28% of sales, closely followed by Nestle' Rowntree (26%) and Mars (23%). The multiple grocers are gaining distribution share at the expense of CTNs. Almost 87m of pounds sterling was spent on advertising 1992. Prices have been rising relatively slowly, due to low cocoa prices and competition.
