Abstract:Sugar confectionery account for just under 35 per cent of total confectionery volumes in 1995 and for just under 30 per cent of value. Consumption amounted to some 284,000 tons and market value to o1.4 bn. Volume has been flat since 1990 , although value has increased by 30 per cent, due largely to rising average prices and the development of added-value lines. Gums and jellies constitute the largest sector of the market, followed by boiled sweets. Chewing gum was the third-largest sector by value in 1995 but fifth in volume terms. The fastest-growing sectors since 1990 have been fudge and chewing gum, the slowest have been boiled sweets and toffees/caramels.
