Abstract:An international panel data set and a dynamic demand specification for gasoline are used in this paper to compare the performance of homogeneous and heterogeneous parameter estimators. A forecast performance comparison is performed to examine differences in predictions over one-, five-, and ten-year horizons in addition to comparing the plausibility of the various estimates. The results of this article confirm the value of panel data sets and pooled estimators. In the class of heterogeous estimators the shrinkage estimator appears the most promising, but it also is dominated by the traditional homogeneous pooled estimators.
