Abstract:Public enforcement of law -- the use of public agents (inspectors, tax auditors, police, prosecutors) to detect and to sanction violators of legal rules -- is a subject of obvious importance. Enforcement policy affects, for example, the amount of pollution that firms generate, the extent of compliance with the income tax case, and the incidence of theft, robbery, and other crimes. The main purpose of this article is to present the economic theory of public enforcement of law in a systematic and comprehensive way.
