Abstract:A central issue of open innovation (hereafter as: innv.) is free revealing (here as: f-rvl.) of the detailed workings of new products and services, so that others may use them, learn from them, and maybe improve them, as well. This study explains that innovators (as: innvts.) frequently do f-rvl. of proprietary information and knowledge as to both information-based products and physical products. It is explained why f-rvl. can make good economic sense for innvts. and also for society. The case for f-rvl. in terms of a 'private collective' model of innv. incentives is developed.
