Abstract:A widespread but untested assertion is that technological modularity (hereafter as: modlty.) reduces the need for alliance (as: all./alls.) control (here as: ctrl). This paper aims at developing and testing this assertion. Based on data from 120 software outsourcing alls., it is shown that process ctrl., outcome ctrl., and modlty. independently enhance all. performance. However, modlty. and ctrl. are imperfect substitutes: modlty. lowers the influence of process ctrl. but not of outcome ctrl. on all. performance.
