Abstract:The emergence of conflicting and competing graphics standards is causing confusion for users and vendors alike. The Graphical Kernel System may be an approved standard, but it is not perfect. Graphics packages such as Post-Script, X-Windows, and Graphical Data Display Manager are mentioned as de facto existing standards. Work is currently going on to develop or extend other graphics systems (GKS, 3-D, PHIGS etc.) to be able functioning as standards. Though it will take some years to define, PHIGS+ may be the way of the future.
