Abstract:The evolution of spot pricing trends are now coming seriously to the attention of economists and engineers, as principal characteristics of world fuel markets. Very broadly energy markets can be characterized by fuel type, and this allows to examine and describe spot pricing mechanisms in markets for coal, gas, electricity and renewables, while remaining conscious of the fact that the world price of crude oil and oil products remain as the effective marginal cost of energy. A taxonomy of efficiency gains is provided. The main objectives and incentives to spot pricing are also examined in terms of the competitive structure of fuel markets.
