Abstract:The interrelated problems of deforestation and fuelwood shortages are widespread phenomena that are too well known in developing countries. An option to alleviate this situation lies in the smokeless coal briquette in some cases. Coal briquetting and carbonizing technologies that convert coal to a smokeless, strong, and low-emissions briquette for domestic or commercial application and potential health effects are described. The experiences with briquettes of countries in which the technology has been tried are recounted, including some cost studies indicating the briquettes are competitive in some countries. The necessary steps for evaluating the viability and implementation of coal briquetting strategy are described.
