Abstract:The greatest gain in computing performance since 1989 has been through the move to large-scale parallelism - enabled at NCSA by a Thinking Machines CM-2 added in 1989 and a 512-processor parallel distributed memory CM-5 in 1992. Attesting to the value of this transition, the number of NCSA projects using more than 1,000 processor hours per year (in Cray X-MP units) increased from 10 to 100 after the CM-5 became generally acceptable.
