Abstract: | Technological development and user demand for strandards are creating a sea of change in information systems. RISC and Unix provide a number of advantages for users, independent software vendors, systems integrators, and value-added resellers. Established vendors and users are wrestling with ways to preserve proprietary systems' advantages while achieving connectivity among dissimilar platforms. A lot of problems of adaptation are addressed. The effects of the growing role of standards are analyzed. The shifting balance of power between corporations as well as between countries is demonstrated. |
