Abstract:A significant mechanism IBM (International Business Machines) uses, called joint programs, fosters the transfer of technology from research to development by teams of research and development people who agree on plans and work together to achieve them. It is described how these joint programs came into being, how they work, and their advantages. The key elements in the joint programs are: focusing on the reduction to practice of the next generation technology: resources provided by a development organization and by Research: a single program director, based in Research: a single comprehensive plan, agreed to by both parties; a long-term management commitment to continue the work.
