Abstract:The new Enterprise Systems Connection /ESCON/ Architecture enables mainframe computers to be placed as much as 9 kms away from input/output devices as disk, tape and display controllers, compared with a current 120-m limit imposed by copper cabling. A fiber optic connection promises greater computer room configuration flexibility, as unveiled by IBM in last September. IBM's ESCON will improve system throughput at 10 MB/s transmission rate and it offers lower cabling costs. The ESCON building blocks are described briefly. ESCON channels are available now, and the benefits they offer are clear, especially greater efficiency. The proces of the building blocks are given.
