Abstract:Forecasting a gloomy future for stand-alone mid-range computers based on proprietary operating systems, vendors are dressing up minis as open system servers and hoping for the best. Though the worldwide market for mid-range systems continues to grow, proprietary systems will grab a smaller share in coming years. The use of 486-based computers as servers is expected to soar in the next 12 to 18 months. According to Hewlett-Packard, UNIX-based systems are outselling the HP-3000 proprietary. Some other views regarding the future role of minis and proprietary systems are presented.
