Abstract:In the computer industry, the technology goes through four stages on its way to the final customers: the hardware; the software; the applications; and the distribution system. Arguments are presented that computer industry is not maturing, it is molting. Standardization of hardware and software, increasing integration of systems and capabilities, and the Japanese "technology tsunami" are combining to effect tremendous transformation in the industry. Intel Corporation President and chief executive officer Andrew S. Grove looks at what these trends mean for the computer industry of the 1990s. New trade and investment practices are offered. It is predicted that small companies will replace the large older companies.
