Abstract:The development of forms and content of inter-firm agreements from 1980 to 1989 is examined. Two main types of agreements are determined: one is based on complementary products and a corresponding market segmentation; the other is based on cooperattion which leads to an efficient restructuring of production processes. Inter-firm agreements as a strategic tool of adjustment to the rapidly changing business environment are characterized. The relationship between the agreements and the organizational structures is explained. It is shown how some European companies and groups of companies of information industry apply cooperative agreements in order to increase their competitiveness. Some impacts on industrial structure are considered.
