Abstract:The business community in the USA has come to view immigrants increasingly as an essential source of new talent and brainpower. After the first revision of America's legal immigration laws last year, total immigration levels will be raised by 30 percent, to 800,000 new entrants per year. They are selected on the basis of their high skills and education levels. Family unification will remain fundamentally intact. However, anti-immigrant sentiments are cultivated by an expanding network of vocal and well-funded nativist groups. Half of USA engineering Ph.D.s are now awarded to immigrants. Over 10,000 highly trained Asian immigrants are employed in the electronics and computer industry. Immigration is America's greatest comparative advantage.
