Abstract:Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Estonia's restoration of independence, the country has been undergoing a transitional period of rapid political, economic and social change to a democratic system with a market-based economy. Those living in Estonia have had to deal with a flurry of changes, and some have been more successful than others in coping with these changes. In looking for a way to measure, compare and contrast the success of different players in the newly emerging system, one finds that the family is the most important unit in measuring Estonia's general welfare.
