Abstract:The difficulty of accurately predicting the future, in the face of what seems to be a cloudless present, is central to the dilemma of conducting business in emerging markets. In 1996, for example, Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia received nearly 40% of the capital inflows to emerging markets worldwide. The economies of the region, with net capital inflows approaching USD 100 billion annually, experienced yearly growth rates of nearly eight percentage throughout the first half of the decade.
