Abstract:Managers very often receive fringe benefits such as a company car and a life insurance. These fringe benefits represent financial incentives for which managers as well as the company derive higher utility than from the equivalent paid in the form of direct remuneration. Because of the heterongenity of the utility functions of the managers it is not appropriate to offer only one plan of fringe benefits. Better is a cafeteria-system of plans from which the managers can choose their most preferred one. Such a system allows for savings in cost while at the same time guaranteeing that the utility level of each manager remains the same. Unfortunately, cafeteria-systems are not offered in practice because it is very difficult to determine cost- minimun caferteria-systems. This paper shows for the first time how this problem can be solved.
