Abstract:In spite of educational expansion and other factors, access to university education (henceforth as: univ-educ.) remains markedly unequal across social classes. According to the 'diversion thesis' by Müller and Pollak, and extended by Hillmert and Jacob, working-class (herein as: w-cls.) children are distracted from the direct path to univ. by non-academic educational (as: educ-al.) institutions, affecting individuals' educ-al. choices etc. In order to test the theoretical approach, data of school leavers having attained the 'Abitur' (high school degree) were gathered in East Germany's federal state of Saxony. The main mechanisms responsible for the fact of w-cls. children being very likely to favour vocational training over univ-educ. are the subjective evaluation of prior educ-al. performance, the probability of success at univ., and the subjectively expected costs. Especially, w-cls. children's educ-al. choices are most influenced by negative estimates of prospective success in univ-educ., causing them to refrain from univ-educ.
