Abstract:A growing number of British organizations use assessment centres for purposes of selecting staff and providing developmental feedback to employees. The Assessment Centre (AC) method is described. The characteristics of an AC are highlighted. In a study data were collected for 80 employees who had attended ACs. Research results are summarized under the following headings: distribution of marks; correlation between managerial characteristics; identification of factors influencing managerial performance; ranking characteristics according their importance; discrimination between candidates. Evidence in favour of ACs is presented and some problems using ACs' information are discussed.
