Abstract:Teach For America, modeled after the Peace Corps, places recent college graduates in teaching positions in some of the nation's poorest, most destitute communities. The program aims to unleash fresh, enthusiastic teachers into understaffed schools amidst rural poverty and urban decay. The program's genesis and tremendous growth has been made possible by support from corporations, foundations and a lot of press coverage. Personal experiences by some teachers in the program are described. Some statistical data, recent progress and further development trends of the Teach For America program are overviewed.
