Abstract:A multiagent simulation framework for examining the emergence of niche markets for products that are innovative environmentally is presented in this article. The relationship between consumer preferences, business strategy, and government policy during development of the market is clarified. The model is described and the way it operates is demonstrated in a case of hybrid cars. Results are analyzed spanning several policy cases that make different assumptions about the heterogeneity of agents. Green niche markets require green consumers in order to emerge, and in order to go mainstream, costs need to go down to parity with conventional products.
