Abstract:In a crisis, there is a critical interval during which participants try to characterize the cause and risks associated with the crisis. This article examines how globally networked experts on the Internet can collaborate to shorten this time interval. It analyzes the mechanisms that enabled the Internet community to reach a rapid consensus concerning the cause and implications of the Pentium flaw. The paper uses this example to draw lessons about the impact that interactive information technology, particularly the Internet, may have on future product crises.
