Abstract:Using data from the Current Population Surveys, a model of earnings reduction and family income replacement in 1985 is estimated for a group of married men displaced from full-time nonagricultural jobs. Substantial earnings losses were found for a large fraction of the sample. Fraction of lost earnings replaced by transfers and spouse earnings was not large on average. The new set of findings raises questions about the effectiveness of traditional mechanisms, both public and private, to aid the displaced-worker family. Displaced-husband families do benefit from the ever-increasing labor supply of married women. The income problem is indicative of a larger set of concerns about lagging productivity and a stagnating living standard.
