Abstract:The Italian market for TVs, video cassette recorders (VCR), and video cameras and camcorders is examined. Total market revenues are estimated to have reached LIT 4,450 billion in 1990, up 11 percent on sales in the previous year. Heavy state subsidy of domestic production is expected to end; Italian TV producers face a period of rationalization. The camcorder is particularly popular in Italy. The market is characterized by strong growth in consumer disposable incomes, attractive product novelties and by low levels of household penetration in the VCR and camcorder markets. A drop in TV sales is expected and the Italian market for VCRs will stay as a less developed market.
