Abstract:Stupendous economic expansion and growth has brought much prosperity to Asia, but also environmental disaster. Asian countries haven't had time until recently to consider what to do with the ruined environment. Now even the poorest Asian countries, such as China are willing to pay for the big cleanup. Leading the push for better quality of life are the grass-roots environmental organizations, but the green sentiments are striking a chord even at the highest levels of Asian society. For Asia's politicians and bureaucrats the environment is not a quality-of-life issue but an economic one. Pollution is seen as a drag on growth.
