Abstract: | This paper develops a dynamic model of organizational decision making motivated by the decision-making process at a multinational chemical firm, given the pseudonym Chemco. Two major decisions were taken by Chemco that could be attributed in large part to the Bhopal, India disaster: the divestiture of one of its plants and the sale of a business. An analysis of the actions underscores the importance of reference points and constraints in influencing organizational choices. One question raised is whether there are other ways for organizations to take steps that they know are likely to benefit them without having to rely on unanticipated events or crises to jolt managers into action. |
