Abstract:A number of authors have recently called for reconsideration of the way in which gender and the family are investigated within leisure studies. The paper investigates the influence of social policy on male and female adult life patterns through comparative analysis of social policy interventions and labour market outcomes in the economically advanced nations. Family-related social policies universally support father's employment. There is a strong correlation between gender discrimination in family-related social policy and differentials in male-female sports participation rates.
