Abstract:This article discusses whether the TEU is actually more environmentally friendly than the WTO agreements and whether it can provide a role model for greening the WTO agreements. This paper analyses whether European Union Member States have greater leeway in enacting environmental measures than WTO Members have and how the WTO agreements could become reformed accordingly. Note that environmental measures are to be interpreted broadly here, encompassing measures aimed at the protection of the natural environment, such the conservation of resources, the preservation of species or the prevention of global warming, as well as measures aimed at the protection of animal and human health and life.
