Abstract:In applications of hedonic methods, usually one hedonic price function is estimated for the whole product market in consideration. In this paper mixture models are used to identify latent structures with different relations between product characteristics and prices. The author of the article states that the hedonic mixture model outperforms a hedonic model that was estimated for the whole market, as well as two-step-procedures. Therefore the hedonic mixture model offers a better estimation of hedonic prices. Furthermore, the results can give information about competitive products and support product policy. The paper also provides a substantial list of references on this subject.
