Abstract: | It is questioned if culture shapes the demand for social (hereafter as: soc.) insurance (herein as: insr.) against risks to health and work. This issue is studied across language groups in Switzerland with a language border sharply separating soc. groups at identical actual levels of publicly provided soc. insr. There is found substantially stronger support for expansions of soc. insr. among residents of French, Italian or Romansh-speaking language border municipalities compared with their German-speaking neighbours. Informal insr. does not vary enough to explain the differences (as: diffs.) in soc. insr. but diffs. in ideology and segmented media markets potentially contribute to the discrepancy in soc. insr. demand. |
