| Abstract: | This paper presents an overview of recent developments in the space tourism industry, offering definitions for the new sector of astrotourism. Drawing on motivational theory, explored are the motivations and experiences demonstrated by astrotourists through interviews reported via the media. Yet, parallels are shown with the terrestrial space tourism industry, which has been mainly ignored. Consequently, examined is also the management of these sites and the challenges set by this niche. There is also evidence of a travel career being marketed by space tourism travel agents, dubbed by one interviewee as 'steps to space'. |
