Abstract:With the use of British Prize Papers, this article analyses the levels of numeracy and literacy for seamen of different ranks from 14 countries in the 18th century. Results show that captains had higher levels of numeracy and literacy compared to lesser officers and ordinary sailors, and Scandinavian sailors had the highest levels found anywhere and they were well above common labour force. The results are discussed in light of migratory and competitive nature of the maritime sector.
