Abstract: | The event study method is well-stablished in Finance and Accounting literature, but there are several good reasons to believe that the findings of these particular studies are misleading. Based on these concerns, this study re- examines the issue, using a more precise event study approach to detecting changes in shareholders' profit expectations in twelve U.S. industries shielded from increased, but fairly traded, imports. In addition to serving as a test of robustness for the existing literature, this study has the practical role of clarifying whether shareholder reactions to protection are consistent with the objectives of industry representatives who seek protection and of policy-makers who consider their petitions. |
