Abstract:The last thirty years have witnessed a competition between two theoretical paradigms: one characterized by constant returns and perfect competition (CRS-PC) and the other characterized by increasing returns and monopolistic competition (IRS-MC). In order to assess the relative importance of the two paradigms, therefore, it seems important to ascertain which sectors can be associated with which paradigm. This requires a discriminating hypothesis suitable for empirical testing. This is the aim of this paper. In the theoretical part, the author identifies a discriminating hypothesis that permits to discern between the two paradigms.
