Abstract:The authors state the question: whether export variety matters for export performance. An influential strand in the theoretical literature has responded in the affirmative. Despite the extensive theoretical work on the new trade theory, however, previous empirical work has not done a very good job of measuring changing product variety over time. The proxies for product variety used in the literature are incomplete, at times primitive, and at best piecemeal. The primary contribution of this paper is to incorporate direct measures of export variety into the literature on explaining trade flows. The authors have empirically ascertained the hypothesis that improvements in the variety of exports are an explanation of OECD trade flows.
