Abstract: | This paper starts from the position that the multinational enterprise (MNE) is likely to be a primary vehicle for any internationalization of the executive labor market. The impact of the MNE on labor markets in general, via its effects on output composition or technology transfer, has been the subject of extensive recent analysis, particularly in respect of widely observed increases in income inequality. However, as far as we are aware, the relationship between MNE activity and the growth of executive remuneration, perhaps the most spectacular manifestation of increased income inequality, has been very largely ignored. This paper presents a preliminary empirical exploration of the impact of the nature and extent of the firm's multinational activities on the compensation of its CEO. |
